The Jungle Shed is a model of sustainable construction based at the University of Exeter's Penryn campus. It was constructed from almost entirely re-purposed/up-cycled materials to provide a home for environmental activism at Tremough campus.

After levelling the ground, the foundations were made from old car tyres gifted to us by a local garage, and filled with hardcore leftover from the construction of other buildings on site. Hazel stakes from a local farmer were used to secure in place the straw bales which made up the walls. The straw bales were left over from the annual slip-and-slide the Students Union runs, which would otherwise have been discarded. The cob (mixture which formed to plaster and hard layer to the walls) is a mixture of clay, sand and straw (unfortunately, the clay had to be brought in from Devon due to a lack of availability in Cornwall). For safety reasons, building grade timber had to be purchased for the roof frame, and a plastic roof was put on.

Discarded guttering found in a skip was installed to allow for rainwater collection into a butt behind the shed, which is now used to water the permaculture garden in the field. All furniture in and around the Jungle Shed is also built out of old pallets pulled from skips.

Tours will cover all aspects of the construction of the Jungle Shed and will allow visitors to ask questions about the building techniques and materials.

* * Please note, the Jungle Shed is situated in a field and ao may be muddy underfoot therefore please could all visitors ensure that they have appropriate footwear for their visit * *
